COVID-19 Vaccine Acceptance and Accessibility Among the Elderly in South Sulawesi

Vaccination coverage among the elderly in South Sulawesi is lower than among the general population and other vulnerable groups. Data from the Ministry of Health’s vaccination dashboard, as of July 18, 2022, showed that vaccination coverage among the elderly remained low compared to the general and other vulnerable groups, except for the first dose in Maros District.

This qualitative study identified that understanding the accessibility and acceptance of vaccines among the elderly and their families can help local governments to develop strategies to increase vaccination coverage among the elderly. There are some policy options to consider:

  • Carry out vaccinations for the elderly separately
  • Cross-sector and cross-program collaboration to reach the elderly, and
  • Improve communication, information, and education (IEC) for the elderly and their families/caregivers
