The AIHSP and COVID-19 Response

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most recent and obvious example of a major health security threat.

As part of its important work in Indonesia, the AIHSP has prioritized efforts to bring the pandemic under control, while also helping to establish sustainable systems that will protect against future outbreaks of infectious diseases and other health threats.

The AIHSP is supporting Indonesia's fight against COVID-19 by:

  • boosting laboratory capacity to increase the number of COVID-19 tests that can be done and to improve the speed and accuracy of the test results
  • improving surveillance and data systems so that decision-makers have access to reliable and up-to-date information on the state of the pandemic
  • partnering with the Ministry of Health, selected provinces and civil society organizations in delivering effective public communications to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake, promote appropriate risk-reduction behaviours and counter false claims about the coronavirus and vaccinations
  • helping the government to identify and support population groups (such as people with disabilities) most at risk and/or affected by the pandemic
  • enhancing and expanding Indonesia's in-country capacity to undertake whole genome sequencing in order to quickly identify and track any COVID-19 variants of concern
  • providing a team of experts who can advise the national government and selected provincial government on how best to accelerate and manage the COVID-19 response
  • working to develop One Health capacity to coordinate human, animal and wildlife health endeavours and address cross-sectoral risks from zoonoses and emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19
  • improving the delivery of health services for the early detection of, and response to, emerging infectious diseases in animals, including diseases that might spread to humans.
